I forgot how tired I felt
\nwhen at two in the morning I was woken up by a crying baby
\nand a frustrated wife.<\/p>\n

I forgot how keenly aware I was
\nof the sleep I was losing,
\nthe productivity I would be sacrificing
\nand how much my forthcoming decrease in mental alertness would cost me.<\/p>\n

I forgot the amount of
\nresent, anger, and self pity
\nthat would build up in me
\nwith every minute this child would lay awake in my ever weakening arms.<\/p>\n

But I also forgot<\/p>\n

I forgot what would happen when I would look down
\nand lock eyes with this child.<\/p>\n

I forgot the amount of innocence a pair of beady little eyes could hold. \u00a0<\/em><\/em><\/em><\/p>\n

I forgot how magically disarming that glance could be.<\/p>\n

I forgot how quickly
\nall of my selfish emotions
\ncould be replaced
\nby feelings of love and compassion,
\nand how easily all other
\ntasks and responsibilities
\nwould fade into oblivion,
\nall other tasks, that is, besides sleeping.<\/p>\n

I simply forgot<\/p>\n

I wrote this poem as I reflected on my new reality with a newborn in the house. \u00a0I also had an article published recently where I wrote about her birth story (relax, there are no graphic details). \u00a0The article was published in the local Western Wheel newspaper:<\/em><\/p>\n
